SHOUT
Art Hub & Gallery

SHOUT Contemporary is pleased to announce that Paul Wong's solo exhibition "Lost in the Magic Kingdom" will open in ELEMENTS, Hong Kong on 30 March 2024. This exhibition marks Wong's first solo exhibition in Hong Kong and will be on display until May 13. The exhibition is narrated in four chapters: "Paradise", "Fantasy", "Maze", and "Pure Ink". Through abstract techniques, it presents the most vivid slice of his life and his sincere and true emotions and feelings.

Kowloon Walled City, commonly known as Kowloon City or Kowloon Walled City, is often depicted in films and television shows as a dim and damp place, with crowded buildings and tangled electrical wires. Under the neon lights, there are rats scurrying about and rampant crime. This was the real scene of Paul Wong's childhood and upbringing. For the adults at that time, the lawless Kowloon Walled City was a man-made greenhouse for gangsters, where vices such as gambling, prostitution, drugs, and violence greedily consumed everything in its path, resembling a black hole. However, for young Paul Wong, he found warmth and solace in the colorful and bustling community of this land. It carried his cherished childhood memories.

Since a young age, Paul Wong had a passion for drawing. Even before attending kindergarten, he would seek out areas in the house where paint was peeling off the walls and use the weathered surface as his canvas. He would doodle freely until the entire wall was covered with his artwork. At the age of 12, he became an apprentice to Hong Kong artist Chen Shao Mian, from whom he learned solid foundational skills in painting.

Before that, Paul Wong believed that he was the sole audience for his artworks, and that he himself was the central vessel for the stories depicted in his paintings. His works had only been exhibited in small-scale exhibitions in Beijing and Chengdu. His hometown, beloved dog, love, and even dreams were all represented through colors in his paintings. However, just like how distant memories often appear both vague and familiar, Paul Wong's portrayal of Kowloon City is abstract yet profound.
